Hiking in the Kleinwalsertal valley

At the Walserschanze border station, the path leads down to the upper entrance of the gorge (Berg ticket office). The tour of the Breitachklamm takes about 1 hour. Return from Tiefenbach by bus (change in Oberstdorf) or take the same route back to Gasthof Walserschanze.

From the Walserhaus, climb via the Gerbeweg and Rohrweg to Oberhirschegg. Continue via Schöntel and the Heuberglift mountain station via the upper mountain trail to Bühlalpe. From there, descend via the Maisäss to Mittelberg.

Scenic hike with no significant inclines. From the bus stop in Baad on the circular hiking trail into the Bärgunttal to the Bärgunthütte and on the circular trail back into the valley.

From Hirschegg at the church into the Dürenbodenstrasse and down to the Breitach, into the side water to the Schwabenhütte, out of the valley towards Riezlern via the Jahnhütte to the Letze district and back over the Leidtobel bridge to Hirschegg.

Easy, varied circular walk; worth seeing: waterfalls, Strudellöcher and natural bridge. From Riezlern via Leo-Müller-Strasse and Fellhornweg to Alte Schwendebrücke and along Schwarzwasserbachweg in the direction of Mahdtalhaus. Take the turn-off to the left and follow the Karolinenweg to the Naturbücke. Via the Kesselschwandweg up to Egg and at the social center over the ravine to Riezlern-Dorf.

The hike into Gemsteltal begins at the "Gemse" bus stop between Mittelberg and Baad, where the Gemstelweg branches off to the left and leads across the Breitach to the confluence of the Gemstel and Breitach rivers. From here, the trail leads into the Gemstel valley. Rewarded with magnificent views, you will reach the Gemstel-Schönesboden Naturalpe after around half an hour. After a short rest with views of the Kleiner Widderstein, Bärenkopf and Walmendingerhorn, you hike towards the end of the valley to the Hintere Gemstelhütte. After another rest, return along the same route.

Pleasant but demanding hike with beautiful panoramic views of the Allgäu Alps, Ifen and Gottesacker area and the via ferrata. From the Kanzelwand mountain station via the Rossgundalpe and Kühgundalpe to the Fiderepasshütte (2065 m). Descent via the Vorderwildenalpe, Fluchtalpe and Innere Wiesalpe to the Höfle. From there via the Höflerbrücke bridge and the Höflerweg trail to the village.

The highest mountain in Kleinwalsertal; the ascent to the summit leads through rocky terrain and requires surefootedness, a head for heights and a good level of fitness. If you find the ascent to the summit too difficult, you can also do this tour as a hike around the Widderstein. An easy, very beautiful tour. From Mittelberg into the valley via Sonnhalde to Bödmen. Continue into the valley and via the Gemstelweg trail into the Gemsteltal valley. Via the Gemstel huts up to the Gemstel pass and on to the Widderstein hut. Possible ascent to the summit (2536m) or continue over the Hochalp Pass into the Bärgunttal and on to Baad.

An easy mountain tour, also for beginners, with beautiful views of Hirschegg, Mittelberg, Baad and across to the Ifen. From the Kanzelwand mountain station via the Adlerhorst to the Kuhgehrensattel and the Kuhgehrenspitze (1910 m). From there via the Innere Kuhgehrenalpe down into the Wildental, past the inner and lower Wiesalpe and the Bergheim Moser into the Wildentalstrasse and via the Sonnhalde into the village.

A beautiful, not too difficult tour; fitness and surefootedness required for the summit trail. From Mittelberg via Moosstrasse and Sonnhalde to Bödmen. Continue along the Gemstelweg into Gemsteltal. Via the Obere Gemstelalpe and Sterzer Hütte to the Geißhornjoch. Ascent to the Geißhorn summit (2366 m). Continue via the Schwabengrat to the Mindelheimer Hütte and Kemptner Scharte. Descent via the Hinterwildenalpe into the Wildental valley. Past the Fluchtalpe and Innere Wiesalpe to the Höfle. Over the Höflerbrücke bridge and the Höflerweg trail to Mittelberg.

Descent via the Kemptner Scharte into the Wildental valley. Past the Fluchtalpe Innere Wiesalpe - Untere Wiesalpe and Bergheim Moser to Schwendle. Via the Wildentalstrasse to Bödmen and via the Sonnhalde back to Mittelberg.

This hike stretches through the picturesque Gemstel Valley, one of the enchanting side valleys of the Kleinwalsertal, nestled at the foot of the imposing Großer Widderstein. The path first leads along the Breitach, then follows the Gemstelbach stream. You then reach "Bernhards Gemstelalp" and return on the opposite side of the valley. This hike is an exciting research adventure for families, as it is part of an extensive naturalist project. With the help of a research book, which is available from the tourist office in Hirschegg, and eleven research stations along the way, tricky tasks relating to the topic of "wild animals" are solved. Thanks to its short distance, the research tasks and the low level of difficulty, the route is perfect for families with children - even an all-terrain baby carriage can manage the trail.

A special feature of the Schwarzwasserbach stream is that it has carved its way through rocks and stones over the centuries. The traces of this natural erosion are still visible in the stream bed today, in the form of old erosions known as "kettle holes". The highlight of this refreshing hike is undoubtedly the natural bridge - a natural stone bridge that crosses the stream or its bed. If you continue along the path, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Ifen and the Schwarzwasser valley.

The water level of the Schwarzwasserbach often varies greatly. Sometimes it carries a lot of water and creates an impressive water feature with loud splashing and roaring. At other times it almost dries up, allowing you to take a closer look at the formations in the rock.

The starting point for this hike is the Auenhütte at the Ifenbahn. After about 10 minutes, you will reach the first exciting photo motif, the man-made Herzsee lake. The trail then leads through the Rüchewald forest through open, wildly romantic forests and boulders that broke off from the Hoher Ifen many years ago to the Melköde. From there, the path leads uphill to the Schwarzwasserhütte.

Melköde is one of the most beautiful places in Kleinwalsertal, not least because of the impressive waterfall nearby. The Schwarzwassertal has a remarkable variety of flora and serves as an important refuge for endangered species such as capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, sparrowhawk, rock partridge, eagle owl, dipper and adder.

Although this hike is easy, it may be a little too strenuous, especially for younger children. It is therefore a good idea to shorten the hike and stop at the Melköde Alpe for refreshments. Up to there, the path is gently ascending and can also be managed with an all-terrain baby carriage.

The starting point of this hike is the mountain station of the Walmendingerhorn cable car. From there, an initially wide path leads downhill, later along the slope to the Obere Lüchlealpe. A short detour to the Innerer Stierhof alp is recommended. The trail then leads over the Ochsenhofer Scharte into the Schwarzwassertal, from where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Ifen and the Schwarzwassertal. After the initial steepness, the trail becomes more moderate and leads past the Schwarzwasserhütte, through high moors and down to the Galt- and Melköde plateau. You pass the Herzsee lake and finally reach the Auenhütte hut.

We recommend this hike for older children, as it is considerably more strenuous and longer than other recommended family hikes.

During this hike, children are entertained by a fascinating search for the Haspelwaldmändle, which supposedly lives in the forest of the same name below the Walmendingerhorn. Along the route, you pass six stations whose contents should be read carefully so that you can easily answer the quiz question at the end of the trail. For attentive hikers who give the correct answer, a small surprise awaits at the Bühlalpe.
